Fashion and biodiversity: The opportunity

Fashion is extremely nature resource intensive and the apparel industry is a significant contributor to biodiversity loss, with apparel supply chains directly linked to soil degradation, conversion of natural ecosystems, and waterway pollution. While the industry is increasingly looking at its role on climate and carbon, biodiversity remains more of a blind spot.

We expect biodiversity to become an even greater concern for consumers and investors in the coming years. As McKinsey & Company noted, COVID-19 has accelerated this β€” perhaps because people now understand more deeply that human and animal ecosystems are interconnected.

According to their analysis, the five largest contributors to biodiversity loss by the fashion industry are through 1. cotton agriculture, 2. wood-based natural fibers/man-made cellulose fibers, 3. textile dyeing and treatment, 4. micro-plastics and 5. waste. It’s time for the apparel industry, which has contributed heavily to biodiversity loss, to now make bold moves in the opposite direction.

Alongside reducing its negative impact on biodiversity and natural resources, is the opportunity for fashion brands to support climate and biodiversity goals by engaging on Nature-Based Solutions that help to protect and restore our forests, peatlands, oceans and rivers.

What could be more powerful as a brand, than being able to point to real impact you're delivering with - and for - nature as an integrated part of your brand, strategy and campaigns?

We are now inviting fashion brands to step into The Greenhouse to create nature led partnerships and campaigns that deliver tangible impact for biodiversity and your business, alongside compelling communications to engage your community.
